Re:Joyce: An Evening of Joycean Art by Carl Arrington
On the 100th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses and Joyce’s 140th birthday, the Center Gallery celebrates with an evening of art and readings by Carl Arrington inspired by the Irish novelist.
Carl Arrington is something of a pioneer in Joyce portraiture creating his first James Joyce as a porcelain head bust in 1979. In the 41 years since he has created an archive of dozens of cartoons, drawings, paintings and sculptures through the years, a selection of which will be exhibited for the February presentation. For a while Carl ran a James Joyce-ish webzine called the The Haunted Inkbottle. Over the years he lectured at the James Joyce Society when it met at legendary Gotham Book Mart. A portrait of Joyce by Carl was chosen as a cover image for James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: A Case Study (Oxford University Press, 2003).
Carl spent most of his career as a celebrity journalist chasing all the one-name stars: Mick, Madonna, Sly, Tina, Mariah, Patti Smith and Kurt Vonnegut, and Pope John the 23rd. He held an actual moon rock that belonged to Carrie Fisher. Now he is mostly retired and makes art and writes.
The event will be held on 2 February 2022, 7:00pm, 135 Columbus Ave, 65th St. Presentation.
