The New York Ulysses Book Club is a weekly, virtual book club/class for readers of all levels of experience with Ulysses, but especially welcoming those who have always wanted to read the novel but have not had the time or circumstances.
We will read and discuss one chapter per week, starting 8 February and ending 7 June, right in time for Bloomsday festivities.
The course will be facilitated by JJS President Jonathan Goldman, with Joyce experts from the James Joyce Society and around the world logging in to lead sessions and provide critical contexts. Guest leaders will include: Alison Armstrong, Keri Walsh, Robert Seidman, Sam Slote, Gregory Erickson, Maria McGarrity, Catherine Flynn, Caroline Elbay and Jonathan Greenberg.
Our aim is to promote the idea that not only can everyone read Ulysses, but everyone can enjoy it.

The James Joyce Society was officially formed in February, 1947 at the Gotham Book Mart, 41 West 47th Street in midtown Manhattan. ("New York" has never been part of its name, as it was the first organization devoted to Joyce.) The first to pay membership dues was T.S. Eliot. The JJS story parallels much of the history of Joyce reception and dissemination in that the group owes its existence to a woman, in this case Frances Steloff, owner and proprietor of the Gotham–"the Sylvia Beach of New York," as the late Zach Bowen called her.
