Yes I will Yes! An extravagance of Molly Blooms
A free adaptation for the theatre of the Penelope episode of Ulysses is the centrepiece of Bloomsday in Melbourne's 29th annual festival.
Molly Bloom – earthy, vulgar, feisty – is reinvented for the centenary of James Joyce’s infamous banned classic. Forced to choose between a rich adulterer with a vicious glint in his eye and an all-too-familiar husband in Leopold Bloom, Molly reveals herself as never before, the celebrated toast of Gibraltar, Dublin and the world. Bloomsday presents the world premiere of a riotously funny and shockingly frank adaptation of the (in)famous final chapter of Ulysses. She is not one but three and in dialogue with herself as she negotiates the complex issues her fling on 16 June raises. She is not one but three Mollys, and she steps out of the pages of Ulysses to take part in three alternative futures in 1922.
In addition to this stage play, seminar papers by Professor Peter Kuch and Associate Professor Frances Devlin-Glass will reflect on issues raised in the episode and in Bloomsday's new film, Love's Bitter Mystery.
