Ulysses: 100 Views

Has Marilyn Monroe read the book or is she just posing with Ulysses? Find out this and much more in the jubilee exhibition celebrating the novel's 100th birthday. The show will open in the Strauhof on 2 February 2022. The focus: the book itself.
Exactly 100 years to the day after its publication by Shakespeare and Company in Paris, Strauhof and Zurich James Joyce Foundation. are opening a Ulysses exhibition in the Joyce city of Zurich. Using 100 exhibits, Zurich stages the book of the century - and also its publication with many obstacles and the diverse reception, up to its afterlife in popular culture.
The curation does not look for the “authentic” in manuscripts and proofs – copies of which are available here – but in original objects and everyday objects that illustrate Joyce’s materially richly endowed universe. Ulysses is as language- and style-conscious as it is realistically precise down to the last detail. Numerous objects come from the Joyce Foundation collection, some of them from the period of the novel.
Let yourself be surprised by 100 objects on the way through the 18 chapters, and learn something about the adventurous development and the great radiance of the novel of the century up to our time. The exhibition is curated by Ursula Zeller and Ruth Frehner, curators of the Joyce Foundation, and is being created in cooperation with the Strauhof Museum.
