Bloomsday route Madrid-Dublin
The walking route for Bloomsday in Madrid will be led by actors, Muriel Pernas, Raquel Vicente and Jonathan Mellor touring the centre of Madrid on Thursday, 16th June, dressed as James Joyce, Stephen Dedalus and Molly Bloom. The route recreates Ulysses in the streets, pubs, libraries and shops of Madrid, all within the most notable literary area of the Spanish capital.
This tour will depart from Cuesta de Moyano at 11:30, the first of the stops where different passages from the novel will be recited according to the places that are the setting for its eighteen episodes. It will continue towards the Prado Museum, stopping at the Monument of the painter Velázquez; at 12:50, followed by the National Library of Spain, where the famous passage from the novel alluding to Hamlet will be read in both Spanish and English. It will be followed by a stop at 13:30 at the James Joyce Pub, where, as in Ulysses, Burgundy wine and gorgonzola cheese sandwiches will be tasted.
At 17:00, the tour will resume at the Convento de las Trinitarias and its tombstone in memory of the tomb of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, reading the passage from the novel of the Glasnevin cemetery; Later, participants will visit the pharmacy of calle León, on the corner of calle Lope de Vega, the Madrid equivalent of the famous Sweny Pharmacy, and continue to the Gran Hotel Inglés, an emblematic literary location of Madrid.
Bloomsday Madrid-Dublin continues at 19:00 with the Bloomsday Society and Ateneo de Madrid with the tribute to actress Magüi Mira, who has performed the final monologue of Ulysses by Molly Bloom in various theatres since 1980.
The initiative aims to recreate the festive atmosphere that characterises Dublin's Bloomsday every year, so it will encourage citizens to join the tour dressed in Edwardian fashion as Bloomsday is celebrated in Dublin.
