The programme pays tribute to Aloys Skoumal (1904–1988), Czech scholar, diplomat, and translator of Jonathan Swift, Laurence Sterne, James Joyce and numerous other authors – Irish, English, American and German. In the making for five decades, Ulysses was Skoumal’s magnum opus, published under grotesquely restricted conditions in communist Czechoslovakia, where the novel was regarded as the epitome of “Western decadence”.
